HiTek Power announces robust 20kW high voltage power supplies

March 8, 2007

HiTek Power has added the OL20K 20kW family to its range of inherently robust high voltage power supplies, offering output voltages from 60kV to 200kV and beyond.  The eight members of this family have been built to meet the rigorous requirements of ion beam and electron beam systems.  In addition to standard units, the supplies can be customised to meet specific requirements.

Each system consists of a converter, in a 6U, 19 inch rack-mounting unit, and a separate high voltage multiplier assembly.  Power conversion is achieved by zero-voltage switching a fully bridge of the latest generation insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs).

The systems arc protection is so good that the output can be shorted to ground repeatedly in quick succession, with no damage to the supply.  The supplies are highly stable:  output voltage changes by less than 0.1 per cent for a zero to full load change in load currrent and the output will recover to within ±0.5 per cent of set value in less than 100mS from the removal of a short circuit.  Ripple is less than 0.1 per cent peak-to-peak of rated output.  The temperature coefficient is less than 200ppm/°C and drift is less than 0.5 per cent in 8 hours after 1 hour warm-up.

A full remote interface incorporates both digital and analogue control and monitor signalling.  All are optically isolated to provide an efficient and versatile power supply.

HiTek Power introduces compact rack-mounting 80kV power supply

January 3, 2007

HiTek Power has introduced the OL6000/803, an 80kV power supply for applications ranging from ion implantation to electron-beam welding to particle acceleration.  The robust new supply is housed in two 4U high, 19-inch rack-mounting chassis weighing a total of 80kg, making it one of the smallest and lightest in the industry for its output.

The OL6000/803 incorporates HiTek Power's proprietary Arc Count and Extinguish (ACE) arc management system, which continuously monitors the output of the supply and can be programmed to perform a number of different actions if one or more arcs is detected.  This dramatically improves the reliability of the entire system in which it is installed.

The new unit takes its supply from a three-phase mains input and offers a continuously variable output up to 80kV and 75mA.  Output ripple is very low, at less than 80kV peak-to-peak at 80kV.  Line regulation is less than 0.05 per cent deviation in output voltage for a 10 per cent change in line voltage at 80kV and load regulation is less than 0.05 per cent deviation in output voltage for a 0 to 75mA change in load current at 80kV.  Recovery to within 0.1 per cent of the previous operating level achieved is very quick, at 500mS.

HiTek Power announces dual high voltage power supply for ion implanter applications

December 8, 2006

HiTek Power has introduced a dual 5kV/60kV rack-mounted power supply for ion implanation applications.  This approach keeps costs low while meeting the demanding requirements of ion implanter manufacturers in the US and Japan.  For example, the system offers superior ripple and noise performance at output levels below 5kV, together with a full range of remote monitoring and control functions.

The 5kV section has a continuously variable output voltage from 250V to 5kV and is intended for shallow implants.  Output current is between 0 and 200mA and load regulation is better than 5V for a 0 to 100 per cent change in current.   Ripple is less than 5V peak-to-peak and recovery time is better than 500mS to within 0.1 per cent of set voltage.

The 60kV section is intended for deeper implants and offers a continuously variable output voltage between 5kV and 60kV.  Output current is between 0 and 100mA and load regulation is better than 0.05 per cent deviation in output voltage for a 10 to 60mA change in load current at 60kV, increasing to 0.3 per cent at 5kV.  Ripple is less than 60V peak-to-peak at 60kV and recovery time is better than 500mS to within 0.1 per cent of the previous operating level.

HiTek Power has been a global supplier of power supplies to all the major ion implanter manufacturers for over 25 years.  HiTek medium and high voltage power supplies provide high performance, high reliability and exceptional quality, all of which have led to the company's success as the world leader in the ion implantation power supply market.

HiTek Power introduces family of compact high voltage power supplies for

ion and electron beam systems

August 9, 2006

HiTek Power has introduced the OL10K family of 10kW high voltage power supplies for use in a wide range of ion and electron beam systems. The supply’s 3U high converter box is one of the smallest in the industry, and an optional active arc management system is particularly useful in ion implanter applications.

The OL10K family is mains powered and provides a choice of eight maximum output voltages between 60kV and 200kV at maximum currents between 160mA and 40mA Output voltage changes by less than 0.1% for a zero to full load change in load current and the output will recover to within ±0.5% of set value in less than 100ms from the removal of a short circuit. Ripple is less than 0.1% peak-to-peak of rated output. The temperature coefficient is less than 200 ppm/°C and drift is less than 0.5%/8 hours after 1 hour warm-up.

These highly reliable, rugged systems comprise two units: a rack-mounted or free-standing power converter, through which remote controls are facilitated; and a separate high voltage unit employing a modular disc construction.

A number of features are incorporated to ensure that system integrity is maintained during adverse operating conditions. These include continuous primary current monitoring with fast pulse truncation and soft start, extensive thermal monitoring and automatic shutdown on key components, passive output current limiting for instantaneous surge control and independent output overvoltage sensing. Optionally, HiTek Power’s Arc Count and Extinguish (ACE) system can be installed for active arc management.

Full remote control and monitoring is available via a 25-way, D-type connector on the rear panel of the OL10K’s converter unit. The unit also features a full range of front-panel controls and indicators.

HiTek Power introduces versatile

power supply family
January 13, 2006

HiTek Power has introduced the HTK Series of single-output, low-voltage, switch-mode power supplies. These power factor corrected units offer a wide choice of case type, output connectivity and front panel coupled with a choice of 11 output voltages between 3.3 and 54V.

The HTK300 units offer a maximum output power of 198W for the 3.3V variant and 300W for all other variants. The HTK400 supplies have a maximum output power of 400W, except the 3.3V unit, which has a maximum output power of 264W. The supplies accept an input between 90 and 264V and have a typical active power factor correction to 0.99.

All the supplies in the series are available in enclosed, U-channel and open-frame variants. They are offered without a front panel or with a choice of four options – IEC inlet only, terminal block only, power switch and IEC inlet, or power switch and terminal block. The output connector can be a barrier type terminal block, euro type terminal block or a Molex type connector.

The supplies feature over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature and short-circuit protection. A single-wire current share feature ensures that when the supplies are connected in parallel, the individual units share the output current to within ±10 percent of each other. A power-good TTL signal will go low at least 1ms before the output goes out of regulation due to loss of AC input.

HiTek Power teams with e2v technologies
December 15, 2005

HiTek Power and e2v technologies (e2v) have announced a collaborative program to develop a range of highly efficient, power-factor corrected high-voltage power supplies for use in inductive output tube (IOT) RF amplifier systems. Although traditionally used in UHF television transmitters, the new systems are being purpose-designed for applications in ultra-high brightness continuous and pulsed radiation research laboratories.

The new e2v RF IOT system will initially be used as an RF source for use in the 4th Generation Light Source (4GLS) Energy Recovery Linac Prototype (ERLP) that is currently being built at the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire. The ERLP will serve as a test bed for the research and development needed for the design study of the 4GLS. The ERL will be a key part of the world-leading 4GLS facility, which will deliver a suite of radiation sources covering the Terahertz to soft X-ray regimes. 4GLS will enable the study of real-time molecular processes and reactions on timescales down to tens of femtoseconds, with the emphasis on molecular and device function.

Similar installations being developed elsewhere in the world will also be target markets for the e2v system using the HiTek power supply.

The power supply initially being developed by HiTek Power for the e2v system is based on its established topology and will supply up to 28kV at up to 1.2A. This solid-state unit will be subject to the very tight space constraints of the overall system. HiTek Power has worked very closely with e2v, making significant modifications to its standard supply and is developing it even further as the overall system specification evolves. An IOT, coupler, solid state amplifier and ancillary power supplies, together with complex interfacing, are then added to the HiTek supply by e2v, resulting in a system that takes AC in and produces tightly-controlled RF out. This program allows e2v to offer a fully-integrated system from wall plug to the RF load, using its proven tubes.

HiTek Power was selected by e2v on the basis of its proven track record in field applications in which high-performance and reliability are critical to the application. The e2v systems need to be highly reliable, as there are very few opportunities for maintenance in the end-application. The contract was won on the basis of evidence from HiTek Power’s proven supplies used in ion implanter applications worldwide and its world-class manufacturing facility in the UK.
